In 1912 Katie Gliddon was imprisoned for two months in Holloway for taking part in the Suffragette mass glass smashing campaign. While detained she kept a diary hidden in the margins of an anthology of poetry by Percy Bysshe Shelley. Post release she continuously edited and revised her account with the intention of her record eventually being published. It never was.

Don’t Believe the Papers…presents a showcase of ongoing work revealing the process of interpreting and creatively responding to Gliddon’s evolving narrative. The project forms part of a practice-based PhD utilising narrative illustration to describe and communicate location specific socio-cultural narratives.

For the duration of the exhibition LOFT, located on the top floor of Croydon Arts Store, will be an active work space featuring a reading area and a selection of archival materials from The Museum of Croydon. Materials will be available to visitors to create their own illustration artworks inspired by the themes within the exhibition.
